How to Listen to Apple Music Offline
Listening to music without an internet connection is one of the most practical Apple Music features. It can help during flights, train journeys, daily commutes, or periods when mobile data is limited.
To decide whether the service is suitable for your needs, it is worth checking the current Apple Music cost in your country, since subscription prices and available plans can vary by region. In the United States, Apple currently lists the Individual plan at $11.99 per month after the introductory offer.
Add Music Before Downloading
Offline playback does not begin automatically when a song appears in a playlist. The track, album, or playlist must first be added to the user’s library. After that, Apple Music provides a download option for saving the content locally on a supported device.
On an iPhone or iPad:
- Open the Apple Music app.
- Find a song, album, or playlist.
- Add the selected content to the library.
- Open the item’s menu or page.
- Tap Download.
For an individual track, users can usually press and hold the song or open the menu beside it. For an album or playlist, the download option is available on the corresponding page. The labels and interface may differ slightly between iOS, macOS, Windows, Android, and the web version.
Download Music on Different Devices
On a Mac, open the Music app and locate the desired content in the library. After adding the item, move the pointer over the song, album, or playlist and select the download command. Apple states that downloaded music can then be played without an active internet connection.
The same general principle applies across supported devices: add the content to the library first, then save it locally. This makes it easier to prepare music in advance instead of trying to download it after the connection has already disappeared.
Check Whether a Song Is Available Offline
A song may appear in the library without being stored on the device. To confirm that it is available offline, open the Library section and look for downloaded content. On some versions of the app, users can filter the library by downloaded music.
A practical way to test the setup is to enable airplane mode temporarily and play a downloaded album. If the track starts normally, the local copy is available. Performing this check before a flight or long journey can prevent unexpected problems.
Enable Automatic Downloads
Apple Music also includes an Automatic Downloads option on supported devices. When enabled, music added to the library can be downloaded automatically, reducing the need to save every album manually. On an iPhone, this setting is available under Settings > Apps > Music.
Automatic downloads are convenient, but they can consume storage quickly. Users with limited space may prefer to download only selected albums and playlists.

Manage Storage Efficiently
High-quality audio files require more storage than standard downloads. Large playlists can occupy a significant amount of space, especially when Lossless Audio is enabled. Review downloaded content regularly and remove albums that are no longer needed.
Removing a download does not necessarily remove the item from the library. In most cases, it deletes the local copy while leaving the music available for streaming or future download.
Important Restrictions
Apple Music downloads are intended for playback inside the service rather than unrestricted use in other music applications. Access to subscription-based downloads also depends on the user’s Apple Account and an active subscription. The device may need to connect to the internet periodically so Apple Music can verify account access.
The most reliable routine is to add music to the library, download it over Wi-Fi, test a few tracks offline, and monitor available storage. This approach provides uninterrupted listening while reducing mobile-data usage.
